Background

The Anubis OS project came about as an idea in the end of 2008, when some AROS developers contemplated the future of AROS in regards to how it could attain modern OS features. Memory protection, primarily, has been attempted for years in Amiga like operating systems, and nobody has yet been able to implement it. AROS has also fought an uphill battle when it comes to hardware drivers, and this battle will not be won anytime soon. Because of these problems, the idea was to base a new AROS/Amiga like OS on the Linux kernel, where we can get all these features and drivers for free.

Modern operating systems tend to be very inflated with unnecessary features, because they approach solving usability problems with the mindset of not being able to cut back on functionality. Instead of cleaning up the operating environment, so that it gets simpler to understand, most systems today mask the operating system elements with heavy applications and software layers. In Anubis, we wanted to get "back to basics" with operating system development. We want a simple operating environment that is user extendable. This means that we are creating a modular system that starts out very compact and small, but which can be customized to fit the need of the user through third party extensions.
